Unit 1: Sholem-aleykhem! with Karo Wegner
Topics covered:
- Vocabulary: Greetings, introductions, geography, basic verbs, numbers, days of the week
- Grammar: Present tense verb conjugations, pronouns, word order
- Culture: Folksongs, brief history of Yiddish
Course expectations:
- This course is designed for students with no prior Yiddish language experience.
- Students are expected to actively participate in all twelve class sessions and complete the assigned homework.
- Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the Yiddish alphabet before the program begins.
- Students must have a Google account in order to use Google Classroom. Those without an existing Google account must create one.
- Students must have a computer with a webcam and microphone, headphones, Internet access, and some proficiency with Zoom.
- Students must have a copy of In eynem: The New Yiddish Textbook.
Class dates:
Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays. Class is from 1–2:30pm Eastern Time, with a short break in the middle.
Orientation: Jan. 4 at noon ET or Jan. 5 at 4pm ET

Cost: $300 for members, $350 for nonmembers. The required textbook is sold separately at $100 in our online store.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellations by December 20 will be refunded, minus a $30 administration fee. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide refunds for cancellations after December 20.
About the Instructor:
Karo Wegner is a Yiddish teacher with four years of experience. An alum of summer programs in Vilnius, New York, Warsaw, and Paris, as well as a teacher’s seminar in Berlin, she first learned Yiddish at Multicultural Humanistic High School in Warsaw. In 2020 she received her BA in Polish language and literature from the University of Warsaw. Currently enrolled in the Jewish Studies MA program at the University of Wrocław, she loves teaching, discussing language pedagogy, and learning languages herself.
