College students interested in learning about Yiddish language and culture still have time to apply for the 2012 Steiner Summer Program at the Yiddish Book Center. The acclaimed seven-week, tuition-free, 6-credit program offers 18 college students a unique educational experience in Yiddish language and culture.

The goal of the program is to provide a new generation with Yiddish language literacy, substantive knowledge, and a deeper comprehension of the history, literature, and culture of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. Students gain an understanding of the wider constellation of Jewish cultural identity through exposure to the Center's work in the areas of preservation, research, translation, bibliography, and artistic expression.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

• Participate in three hours of daily language instruction at the beginner or intermediate level
• Take part in daily Yiddish culture classes
• Develop individual research or creative projects with faculty mentors
• Travel to New York City for a three-day student-faculty field trip to historic and contemporary Yiddish culture sites
• Attend the Yiddish Book Center's summer music festival
• Meet former Steiner students at the Center's annual alumni gathering
• Be eligible for six undergraduate college credits through the University of Massachusetts
