Lomir zikh lernen in eynem—let’s learn together!

Learn Yiddish from home or on your lunch break in a new intensive, online Yiddish-language class for beginners, taught by Asya Vaisman Schulman, director of the Yiddish Book Center’s Yiddish Language Institute and lead author of In eynem: The New Yiddish Textbook. Held twice a week over Zoom, these classes offer an in-depth introduction to Yiddish language, covering all aspects of learning, including oral and written communication, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and culture.

Topics covered:

  • Vocabulary: Greetings, introductions, geography, basic verbs, numbers, days of the week
  • Grammar: Present tense verb conjugations, pronouns, word order
  • Culture: Folksongs, brief history of Yiddish

Course expectations:

  • This course is designed for students with no prior Yiddish language experience.
  • Students are expected to actively participate in all twelve class sessions and complete the assigned homework.
  • Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the Yiddish alphabet before the program begins.
  • Students must have a computer with a webcam and microphone, Internet access, and some proficiency with Zoom.

Class dates:

Classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays.* Class is from 1–2:30pm Eastern Time, with a short break in the middle. Class orientation is on Sunday, November 8 at 1pm ET.

Dates are: 11/8, 11/9, 11/11, 11/16, 11/18, 11/23, 11/24, 11/30, 12/2, 12/7, 12/9, 12/14, 12/16

*The Wednesday class before Thanksgiving is rescheduled to Tuesday, 11/24.

Cost: $275

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations by November 1 will be refunded, minus a $30 administration fee. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide refunds for cancellations after November 1.

About the Instructor:

Asya Vaisman Schulman is the director of the Yiddish Language Institute and the Steiner Summer Yiddish Program at the Yiddish Book Center. Before joining the Center, she taught Yiddish at Indiana University, where she was also the project manager of the Archives of Historical and Ethnographic Yiddish Memories (AHEYM). Asya has taught both extracurricular and for-credit Yiddish courses at Hampshire College, UMass Amherst, Harvard, Columbia, the New York Workers Circle, Gann Academy in Waltham, Massachusetts, KlezKanada, and Yiddish New York. She holds a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University, and a PhD in Yiddish from Harvard. Her doctoral research was on the Yiddish songs and singing practices of contemporary Hasidic women.
