Ilan Stavans"People of the Picture Book: The History of Jewish Children's Literature" is a three-lecture series led by Ilan Stavans that explores the illuminating journey of Jewish children's books from the medieval Haggadah to the rich, multicultural literature produced worldwide today. Stavans is Lewis-Sebring Professor of Humanities, Latin American, and Latino Culture at Amherst College, publisher of Restless Books, and host of the NPR podcast "In Contrast."

Tuesday, May 8: "People of the Picture Book: The Invention of Childhood"
The second lecture surveys the parallel rise of psychoanalysis and the comic-strip industry in the twentieth century as the background against which Jewish children’s book classics like Curious George, Where the Wild Things Are, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar emerged.
